In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Millennium Chapel, a special publication titled “The Priest in a Tracksuit” was launched, honouring the life and legacy of Fr Hilary Tagliaferro—a priest whose work has profoundly impacted Maltese society.
This publication stands as a tribute to a man whose life has been defined not by personal gain, but by an unwavering commitment to serving those on the margins of society. Throughout his journey, Fr Hilary has reached out to the homeless, individuals battling addiction, migrants, disadvantaged children, the elderly, and those in detention—consistently embodying compassion, dignity, and inclusion.
Widely regarded as a unique and influential figure within the local Church, Fr Hilary has long acted as a moral compass, advocating for solidarity, generosity, and social justice. His outspoken stance on key social issues, particularly in relation to poverty and drug rehabilitation, has contributed to meaningful dialogue and reform, promoting rehabilitation over punishment and offering individuals the opportunity for a second chance.
“The Priest in a Tracksuit” brings together personal recollections and experiences from individuals whose lives have been touched by Fr Hilary over the years. His contributions extend beyond pastoral work into sports and education, including the establishment of the Centru Sport Edukattiv, his involvement in football coaching at both local and national levels, and most notably, the founding of the Millennium Chapel—a sanctuary of hope for many.
Known affectionately by many as “Il-Mons”, Fr Hilary’s approachable nature, sense of humour, and deep humanity have left a lasting and positive imprint on countless lives. His work reflects a life lived actively and courageously in service of others, far removed from passive or detached virtue.
In support of this meaningful initiative, Save & Support Trust together with Beating Hearts Malta fully sponsored the publication, covering the printing of approximately 400 copies. All proceeds from the sale of this book are being directed to the Millennium Chapel, further supporting its ongoing mission to assist vulnerable individuals and families within the community.
This publication not only commemorates a remarkable milestone but also celebrates a legacy of compassion, action, and enduring social impact.
